Hillbilly music is enjoyed and played by, well, hillbillies, isn’t it? Arthur Smith and His Crackerjacks started as a family act from South Carolina, which sounds like a typical hillbilly background, but the group got their start as a Dixieland combo, just like their dad. The group went their separate ways while serving in the War, but they came back together after VJ Day in Charlotte, North Carolina, on WBT’s Carolina Barn Dance and eventually made over a 1,000 television shows, over 2,000 radio broadcasts, 2,500 personal appearances and 130 recordings with a decided hillbilly flavor.
