Christmas about one o’clock in the afternoon and Casey and Annie Williams are having a drink in the Blue Note café. Ethelbert sympathizes with them having to work on Christmas day but newspapers have to be printed. They have an assignment on Hackett Street the crumbiest street in town known as “Bums Boulevard”. For the past two years at exactly half past one on Christmas day a guy has turned up on the corner with a wad of new one dollar bills and handed them out to all the rummies around there and when his wad has gone he’s beat it without telling anybody who he is or where he’s from. If he turns up again this year City Desk want a story on it. |
