Spoiler : Arch Oboler wrote about the incident, in one of his books of radio scripts. He said that the show's producers had talked him into writing it, and he took the gig purely for the money. He and his wife read through the script before he submitted it, and they thought it was very funny. But he said that if he'd known it would come across as obscene, especially with Mae's innuendos, and when broadcast on a Sunday, he'd have torn it up, torched the pieces, and dissolved the ashes in acid. He said it was the last time he ever took on a project that he didn't personally believe in.

Spoiler : While I am not exactly doubting Oboler's account, the subject matter coupled with West's well known comedic style makes me wonder how he could have been surprised by her delivery of his material. And, that material clearly depicted Eve as frustrated by Adam's lack of physical interest in her.

Spoiler : I'm sure they knew that Mae would find every molecule of innuendo in the script, and take it to the extreme. Don Ameche said that she really held back in rehearsal, doing it almost half-heartedly and throwaway. But in performance, she took it even further than they'd expected her to. The main reason it seemed so "obscene" is that it was broadcast on a Sunday, a day when most of the airwaves were devoted to religious programming. Putting a naughty Biblical sketch starring Mae West, against that backdrop, was like booking a stripper to perform at a revival meeting.

Spoiler : What pathetic hypocrisy at the time of the skit! While the Church of Rome may have helped establish what eventually became The Hayes Office, it was really other illiterate sects that pushed the issue through to the detriment of intellectual freedom. RC adherents have been - and arm - far from the stupidity of evangelicals. Mae West was hilarious in her delivery of lines. She was one of a kind!
