The Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy Show was a radio comedy variety show that aired from 1936 to 1955. As the title suggests, the show featured ventriloquist Edgar Bergen, and his beloved puppet, the amazing Charlie McCarthy. It is this show which made the duo overnight superstars. The show is also one of the highest paid ever.

The show was first introduced in The Rudy Vallee Hour, and later became a part of the Chase and Sandborn Radio Hour, sharing the spotlight with Dorothy Lamour and Don Ameche. It then went on to become a major hit, even ranking best radio show for a decade. A lot of famous personalities were made guests, and these include Fred Allen, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Rita Hayworth, Orson Wells, May West, and many more. In 1936, Edgar Bergen, and his dummy Charlie McCarthy made their radio debut as a guest on Rudy Vallee's show, and they were such a smash hit, Vallee signed them to a 13-week contract to appear on his Royal Gelatin Hour. Then from 1937 Bergen & McCarthy had their own program. This set of 3 CDs feature all of the exisitng shows that were broadcast by NBC and CBS from 1937 to 1956, as well special programs they were host of, etc. Most everyone has heard about ventriloquist Bergen, and his dummy Charlie McCarthy. In 1939, Bergen added dummy Mortimer Snerd to his family, and in 1944 dummy Effie Clinker was added. Along the way, Podine Puffington (the belle of the air) and Lars Lindquist, a Swedish fisherman was added, but they were never as popular.
