+ Jubilee ran from 1942 to 1953 and was aimed as a morale-building service for black troops and aired for military personnel. The show was hosted by Bubbles Whitman, yet was never broadcast at home. Jubilee filled an important gap in the musical history of radio, though it was transcribed for distribution to service personnel and was not heard home. Conceived, at least in part, as a morale-building service for for Negro troops overseas, it presented bands and entertainment that had been given short shrift by the networks. The wartime host, Ernie "Bubbles" Whitman, was a jive-talking bundle of energy. Most of the shows were recorded before live audiences in Los Angeles: either at network studios or in the facilities of such syndicators as C.P. MacGregor and Universal Recorders. The series has emerged as an important piece of black heritage: its War Department status ex-empted the performing artists from the union-mandated recording bans of 1942-43 and 1947-48, and many of the discs contain unique performances. Jubilee is one of my favorite musical shows from the OTR era.

This series was designed for, and aimed at the Black soldier serving during and after WWII...but for anyone, white, black, yellow, or in-between, this is some of the hottest music this side of heaven. CARL A. HALLSTROM, a Jubilee expert states; "Jubilee was a unique series of radio entertainment designed for the guys and gals in the American Armed Forces during World War II. None of the broadcasts were heard over the regular networks in the USA. Jubilee was produced in Hollywood by the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) and the programs were transcribed on 16" vinylite discs (speed: 33 1/3 rpm) and distributed to various radio stations all over the world. Back in 1985 German bookseller Norbert Ruecker produced two hardcover books offering a "complete" discography of the Jubilee transcriptions. It turned out to be a sort of a draft edition of a manuscript prepared by German collectors Rainer E. Lotz and Ulrich Neuert. Bo Scherman and Hallstrom revised the original manuscript edition of the Lotz-Neuert discography, based on copies of the actual transcriptions and material found in contemporary trade magazines.
