I never watched the TV show, but I am hooked on the OTR edition of "Gunsmoke." I have a special special interest in the program because I am a former Kansan and wonder if my ancestors lived like that, but they nor I didn't live near Dodge.

This is the Daddy of all Radio Shows...I have looked high and low for another one show as good, but can't find one...the only one i like is Tales of the Texas Rangers...Parley Baer was in a lot of the shows, he is also one of the best Voices in OTR, Six Shooter is good too, like many others ...But Gunsmoke, we will never Hear it's Like Again! - Peace + Love from a very cold Ireland...

Conrad remained a star on TV, but I think hardly anyone younger than me (and I'm over 50) realize how awesome he was on radio.

I like the radio show better than the TV version. And I think the William Conrad Matt was a little more caustic and sarcastic with Doc. He would sarcastically needle him over many things about his job as town doctor that I found amusing. I suppose on TV that would’ve come across as condescending and producers wanted Arness to be as likable as possible, whereas on radio it might’ve been a different audience.

Bill Conrad just had this way about him. From anyone ELSE, I believe the comments would've come across as downright rude (even/especially on radio). But, Conrad just came off as one of three things, depending on the comment... 1. Logically Hard Sort of a "Man's Man" attitude 2. Tongue-in-Cheek Insults as only friends make 3. Anger/Impatient Time for the smell of Gunsmoke Just my opinion, of course, but I've come to believe that ONLY Bill Conrad could've pulled these tones/comments off without turning off the fans towards the character.

Virginia Gregg made many appeearances on Gun Smoke. In the Robert Bailey era of Johnny Dollar she appeared numerous times. Virginia Greg appeared in the Megs Palace Matter on Johnny Dollar. She played an Irish in keeper. Really funny.

"Gunsmoke" is such a superb radio show. I enjoy the television series, but the radio show has such an incredible amount of talent -- actors, writers, directors, sound effect techs, you name it. When I'm in the mood to listen to drama, I go to this show more often than not. William Conrad, Parley Baer, and Howard MacNear in particular had such chemistry that -- to their credit -- Jim Arness, Milburn Stone, and Dennis Weaver and (later) Ken Curtis were able to model. But, as usual, I have come to prefer to make my own pictures as I listen to the doings in Dodge City on the radio.

In my opinion, the radio version of Gunsmoke is FAR superior to the television version. The radio version had a much better cast and was much more realistic.

in 1860, the first railroad reached Kansas. Soon towns would spring up along its path. And the only way to deal with the killers and the spoilers that the railroad would bring was a US Marshal.... and the smell of..... Gunsmoke.

Does anyone know why in some AFRS versions only the four permanent cast members were included in the closing credits? I like to know who plays the villain or temptress du jour.

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the premiere of Gunsmoke! Created for adults, this Western program was a contrast to the juvenile Westerns of the day.

The set includes all of the existing regular CBS radio programs broadcast from 1952 to 1961, both audition programs from 1949, all of the existing Australian programs, and close to an 8 hour History of Gunsmoke produced by our OTR late friend, John Hickman of WAMU-American University. (check out our OTV DVD catalog, as we have the complete 20 year run of the TV series on DVD) This 9 CD set features mostly high coded shows.

Gunsmoke, and Johnny Dollar were among the last to survive. So glad OTR lives on!!

Whenever I return to Gunsmoke for a re-listen, I'm always surprised by how *dark* it is. There is a lot of suffering, madness, violence, and death in that show. Entertaining, but grim.

The story is the actors had no idea it was the last episode until George Walsh at the end announced, "This broadcast concludes the current Gunsmoke series" and then previewed the new season of Suspense as taking over its time slot.

Gunsmoke had a long run on TV. It started in 1955, while the radio show was still on the air, and ended in 1975 after 20 seasons. Law & Order SVU is going to become the longest running drama on TV when season 21 airs next season. The Simpsons will start season 31 next year, and 60 Minutes will start season 52 next season.

I never listened to Gunsmoke before the last few days. I think it was because I wasn't much of a fan of the TV show. But I've heard a few episodes now, and I really like it, but it is very different than my memory of the TV show, dark and gritty in a way I didn't think was even allowed back in the fifties. Strange to hear Floyd the barber speaking in such an offhand and uncaring way about death, and Miss. Kitty, so far, is a lot more forward about her feelings, something that always seemed subdued on the TV show. It is almost like the TV show was for families, and the radio show was adult fare. But I am hooked!

I LOVE both the radio and television show. The first 4 seasons of the television show is about 90% of the radio scripts re-fashioned for television. Lots of the radio actors also appear on the television series as well. You should listen to the radio adaption first and then watch the television adaption. It's interesting watching and listening for differences in the two productions.

my wife and I went to Dodge City last year on our way to Texas strictly because we both love the TV show and the radio series. William Conrad was great on the radio series but I can't picture him as Marshall Dillon on the TV show...James Arness physically fits the part better IMO.
