Hopalong Cassidy was a success that it became one of the icons of America’s fictional stories in almost every medium (television, print, radio etc.). Its popularity began riding the radio industry through Mutual Broadcasting System in January 1950 and ran until 1952. This radio program often involves mystery and finding the identity of the culprit with the help of Cassidy.

William Boyd played Hoppy in the movie series beginning in 1934. The role was supposed to be a rowdy, rough-mannered ranchhand. Boyd envisioned Hoppy as a clean-shaven and living (child- directed) cowboy. The producer finally agreed and a new hero was born. There were some 66 films. Boyd had a television adaption in mind, so he called for more close-ups and daylight scenes. Boyd was fired by the studio in 1943, and gambled all he could put together to buy the rights to the films that he carried onto early television. The movies began telecasting on New York local television in 1945, then nationally in 1948. By 1949 Boyd had succeeded with his desire. Hopalong Cassidy was on NBCTV (1949-1951), and fifty-two new half-hour episodes were filmed in syndication with Edgar Buchanan as his side-kick Red Connors. In 1952 the series grossed $70,000,000.

Just discovered Hoppy a couple of weeks ago. I am 48. The acting skills of this mid 30's television show are impeccable. SUPER high quality directing and acting. My dad being a HUGE western fan never really talked too much about Hoppy, Maybe because he was on every Producers milk carton since I was a child?? I dunno. Anyway, Mr. Boyd, you are in my wife and mine's heart the GREATEST cowboy that ever was dear sir. A REAL HERO!!! We Love you Hoppy!!!
