Six Shooter pertained to the weekly radio series written by American screenwriter Frank Burt. First aired on NBC Radio on September 20, 1953, the series lasted for one season, producing only 39 episodes.

The show featured the story of Britt Ponset (played by American stage actor James Stewart), a cowboy from the Wild West. The show was known for Stewart's whispered narration, particularly during intense scenes, as the writer believed that this would be helpful in making the scene more dramatic.

Other stars that appeared on the show were Parley Baer, Harry Bartell, Wiliam Conrad, Virginia Gregg, Howard McNear, Marvin Miller, Jeanette Nolan, Dan O'Herlihy, and Allan Reed.

Jimmy Stewart brought his memorable voice and considerable acting ability to the roll of Britt Ponsett as the Six Shooter. The opening of the show is one of the most memorable in radio play history. Airing on NBC from September 1953 to June 1954, there were just 39 episodes during the show's run.

Britt Ponsett was a laid-back cowboy drifter who found himself in all kinds of situations from comical to dangerous. Stewart was the perfect choice for the title character alternately portraying the character's easy attitude and the stress of the tense situations with the emotion in his voice. If you enjoy Jimmy Stewart's down-to-earth, folksy delivery, you will definitely enjoy The Six Shooter.

It is a really great show. Stewart was doing some classic movies around this time and that is why it was on for a short period. It's a classic!

The Six Shooter's audition show was done in July but the show ran 42 episodes in the 1953-54 season. The show was offered sponsorship by Chesterfield but Stewart turned it down.

I am hoping someone can set me straight on this. I have listened to quite a few The Sixshooter's episodes and find them excellent, but I wonder is this based on a real person and his exploits or was he a real person with made up stuff about him as per Buffalo Bill and Kit Carson or is he fictional? Frank Burt is named as the writer but is he making up these things about a real SixShooter or making it all up including the character?

Total fiction! Britt never existed. Pretty sure Burt made Britt Ponset a bit of an amalgam of real, and fictional cowboys.

Wasn't the whole wild west era kind of made up, or at least very much exaggerated? I guess we all have our individual taste in names. For me, Britt is... well just a lame duck sounding name. As for Ponset, well in English a ponse is a man who is well dressed, possibly a bit efeminet, and also snobbish. So hearing the pons in ponset, that's the image I get haha. Oh, and apparently 'ponce' (correct spelling), can also mean a man who lives off the earnings of prostitutes, or someone who acquires things without paying for them. So the 'pons' has a very unfortunate sound to the English ear haha.

He is a great character, isn't he? I wish he were based on real life. Incidentally, Jimmy Stewart really liked Burt's work, and made one film from a Burt Screenplay, "The Man from Laramie." There was a television show that used many of the same story lines as The Six Shooter, though it was not nearly as well done, in my opinion. It was called "The Restless Gun" and John Payne took the lead role, this time as "Vint Bonner" instead of "Brit Ponsett." Scripts were still by Frank Burt. Just re-listened to this series this spring. The Six-Shooter's fame seems overly large given the exploits we hear in the show. I kept thinking, "Why does everyone know this guy?!"
